For over a century, San Antonio Regional Hospital has been a cornerstone of health care in Upland, California, and surrounding areas.
From providing disaster relief to supporting communities, the humanitarian organization is a trusted source of help for those in need nationwide.
For over 140 years, the Costa Rican Red Cross has been the country’s first line of defense in times of crisis. Whether it’s rushing to the scene of a disaster or delivering care in remote communities, the organization’s dedication to saving lives and alleviating suffering is unmatched. With over 5,600 volunteers and a network of 133 branches nationwide, the Red Cross ensures that no one is left behind in emergencies.
“We have a presence in urban, coastal, rural, border, and high-risk areas. This strong territorial footprint allows us to respond quickly and effectively,” says Dyanne Marenco González, president of the Costa Rican Red Cross. The organization’s fleet of approximately 700 vehicles—including ambulances, operational units and search-and-rescue vehicles—enables rapid deployment, making it a key player in emergency response across Costa Rica.
Core Programs that Save Lives
The Costa Rican Red Cross focuses its efforts on four key programs that address the country’s most pressing needs. The Risk Management and Emergency Response Program is at the heart of its mission, providing disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Other essential initiatives include the Elderly Program, which promotes dignity and access to services for older adults, and the Youth Program, which encourages the next generation to embrace humanitarian values and become community leaders. Finally, the Doctrine and Protection Program ensures that all actions align with the Red Cross’s core principles, safeguarding human dignity in every crisis.
A Trusted Humanitarian Actor
The Costa Rican Red Cross’s longstanding commitment and extensive community ties make it an invaluable resource in emergencies. As part of the National Emergency System, the relief organization plays a critical role in coordinating emergency response nationwide.
“Our unique mandate, combined with strong technical and professional capacity, a highly committed volunteer network, and deep roots in communities across the country, makes the Costa Rican Red Cross a trusted and indispensable humanitarian actor in Costa Rica,” Marenco González says.
Whether responding to natural disasters, accidents or health crises, the humanitarian group stands as a beacon of trust and reliability for those in need.
Engaging Volunteers, Donors and Partners
At the heart of the institution are the network volunteers who play a key role in delivering services and strengthening community resilience. To ensure their long-term commitment and personal growth, the organization invests in continuous training and leadership development programs.
With donors and partners, the Red Cross promotes transparency, accountability, and clear communication to demonstrate how contributions are used. One recent example of this trust is the posthumous donation of USD 223,079.67 by Ms. Flory Ocampo. Thanks to her generous contribution, the institution acquired two ambulances—now named Flory—which will strengthen emergency response capacity and help save countless lives across the country.
Looking to the Future
Moving forward, the Costa Rican Red Cross continues to evolve and strengthen its mission. “We are committed to continuing to fulfill our humanitarian mission of saving lives, delivering relief and preventing human suffering,” says Marenco González. As the Costa Rican Red Cross adapts to the changing needs of communities, it remains dedicated to offering timely, effective and trusted assistance to those in need.
