International students find a safe haven and relevance at University College Roosevelt

The UCR Liberal Arts and Sciences program enables students to tailor their education to address global issues like sustainability

University College Roosevelt (UCR) is a perfect school for students who want to explore college abroad. A small university campus in the heart of Middelburg, Netherlands, is home to about 600 students from over 50 countries. UCR offers students a safe learning environment and the opportunity to build their own programs from nearly 200 courses in science and engineering, social science, and arts and humanities, all with a special focus on addressing global concerns like climate change.

“We are small-scale, intensive and residential,” says Dr. Chad Weidner, who lectures on Film, Media and Rhetoric at UCR. “We offer a distinct program that targets international students, who comprise most of our students. We have a progressive population and welcome people of all stripes.”

Every UCR graduate earns a diploma from Utrecht University, ranked among the top 100 academic institutions globally. The UCR campus, featuring old Dutch buildings reminiscent of Hogwarts, also includes a new Science and Laboratory Engineering Program facility. Additionally, the university has access to the nearby Research Center Zeeland, equipped with modern laboratories for chemistry, engineering, big data, and other fields.

UCR’s focus on sustainability is evident in its emphasis on environmental humanities, a field Dr. Weidner is deeply passionate about. Environmental humanities explore the interconnectedness of all things, bridging the gap between sciences and culture. This focus aligns with the ideals of the Delta Climate Center, which UCR helped to found.

“We hope to offer lots of opportunities for undergraduates to engage in these serious discussions from all disciplinary perspectives,” Dr. Weidner says. “We’re continuously developing truly interesting and innovative ways to offer a curriculum that speaks to sustainability in a broad sense.”
