"We can ‘turn on a dime,’ adjusting almost monthly as technology advances in industries like health care and manufacturing.”
Can you provide an overview of the institution and its key characteristics?
The Ladue School District is a remarkable institution located about 15 miles west of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. While geographically compact at 19 square miles, the district serves a unique and diverse community, encompassing ten different municipalities. This diversity brings its own set of challenges but also significant strengths.
Our district serves approximately 4,000 students across various educational levels. We have an exceptional early childhood program, four elementary schools serving grades K-4, a dedicated fifth-grade center that bridges the gap between elementary and middle school, a middle school for grades 6-8, and a high school for grades 9-12. Our high school enrolls about 1,400 students, while the middle school hosts around 1,000. The elementary schools range between 300 and 360 students each, depending on the location.
One of Ladue’s defining strengths is its diversity. Our community represents over 65 languages and numerous cultural backgrounds. Approximately 19% of our students are Asian American, 16% are African American, 54% are Caucasian, and the remaining percentage is composed of various other ethnicities. We celebrate this diversity, which is reflected in our inclusive programs and educational initiatives.
In addition to our talented students, Ladue benefits from a deeply committed staff, a robust Alumni Association, and the support of the Ladue Education Foundation. Our partnerships extend to local private schools, creating a collaborative educational community that is second to none.
What do you believe are the main factors that contribute to the institution’s success?
Our success is multi-faceted, but it stems from three primary pillars: exceptional students, a supportive community, and a dedicated staff.
We are incredibly fortunate to have students who bring energy and curiosity into our schools daily. Our community also plays a vital role. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we passed a $126 million bond issue—the largest in our district’s history—with the second-highest approval rating ever. This underscores how deeply the community values education and the well-being of our students and staff.
Safety is a critical priority, and much of the bond issue focused on enhancing safety measures across our schools. Beyond that, our staff is simply extraordinary. Our teachers are unwavering in their commitment to students, constantly innovating and adapting to meet their needs. Likewise, our administrative team consistently evaluates and refines our strategic plans to ensure that our curriculum and instruction align with evolving societal and professional demands.
We also offer distinctive programs, such as our veterinary clinic, where students work alongside a certified veterinarian to gain real-world experience. Another standout is our woodworking class, where students construct tiny homes that are donated to individuals in need. These programs exemplify how we combine traditional skills with contemporary relevance, giving students tangible, marketable experiences.
How does innovation play a role in the functioning and progress of your institution?
Innovation is a cornerstone of our philosophy. Our curriculum and instruction teams are constantly researching national trends and best practices to enhance our offerings. For example, I recently attended the Mid-American Association of School Superintendents Conference in Chicago, where I explored advancements in artificial intelligence and its implications for education.
One of our most innovative programs is our community education initiative, which engages parents and local residents in lifelong learning opportunities. This fosters stronger ties between our schools and the broader community.
We also prioritize interdisciplinary collaboration among our staff. For instance, our Director of Technology and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction work closely to integrate cutting-edge tools and methodologies into our classrooms. This ensures that innovation is woven into the fabric of our district, driving continuous improvement and growth.
What message would you like to share with the community and potential collaborators?
My message is one of heartfelt gratitude. I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support of our community, parents, and partners. Ladue is blessed with residents who genuinely care about the success of our schools and the well-being of our students.
To our students, my message is simple: pursue what you love in the service of others. We strive to provide students with multiple opportunities so they can confidently step into the world equipped with skills, passion, and purpose.
For potential partners, Ladue represents an exceptional opportunity to collaborate on initiatives that benefit not only our students but the broader community. Together, we can build programs that prepare young people to lead fulfilling, impactful lives.
What is your vision for the institution over the next 3 to 5 years?
Our vision is centered on growth and evolution. We aim to support every student in reaching their full potential, from underrepresented groups to high-achieving individuals.
We also intend to embrace societal shifts, such as advancements in artificial intelligence, and integrate them into our educational framework. Change is inevitable, but by approaching it with a mindset of opportunity, we can position our students and district for long-term success.
Ultimately, our goal is to continually refine our practices, maintain our leadership in education, and ensure that Ladue remains a beacon of innovation and excellence.
Are there any specific individuals or groups whose contributions you’d like to highlight in the success of your institution?
I’d like to recognize our Board of Education, whose dedication makes everything we achieve possible. Their commitment to our students and staff is both inspiring and indispensable.
I also want to highlight the exceptional character of today’s students. Despite the challenges of social media and modern anxieties, the young people I encounter daily are compassionate, driven, and genuinely inspiring. They are the future, and I’m confident they will continue to make a positive impact on the world.
