"Subscriptions – proven in streaming, retail, and software – are now reshaping travel, creating one of the most compelling opportunities in the sector."
Can you briefly describe your organisation, including what you do and your main products or services?
Pandaw is a small-ship river cruise company specializing in expedition-style journeys across Southeast Asia and India. For more than 30 years, the brand has operated handcrafted teak and brass ships designed after colonial era steamers to access remote waterways and lesser-visited regions that larger vessels cannot reach.
Our itineraries span the Mekong in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, Halong Bay and the Red River in Northern Vietnam, as well as the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Hooghly River, and Kerala Backwaters in India. In addition to river cruises, we also offer cultural expeditions, short sailings, and longer combination journeys focused on local communities, heritage, cuisine, wildlife, and immersive travel experiences.
What makes your organisation different, and what do you consider your key strengths?
Pandaw stands apart through its focus on small-ship expedition cruising and its deep regional heritage. What began as a project to restore a historic river steamer has grown into one of Asia’s leading river cruise companies, with more than 30 years of experience operating across Southeast Asia and India.
Our handcrafted teak and brass ships are intentionally small, typically carrying between 10 and 30 cabins, which allows us to access remote waterways, rural communities, and lesser-visited destinations that larger vessels cannot reach. Rather than focusing on large-scale tourism, our journeys are designed around cultural immersion, slower travel, and meaningful local interaction. Because the ship size is smaller than your standard cruise ship vessel, the atmosphere on board is also very personalized, and a community between guests is quickly formed.
One of our key strengths is our strong connection to the regions we operate in. Many of our crew and guides come from the local communities along our routes, bringing firsthand knowledge, storytelling, and cultural insight to the guest experience. We also place a strong emphasis on destination-sensitive tourism, working to ensure our itineraries support local communities and showcase regional traditions, cuisine, crafts, and heritage in an authentic way.
How would you describe your industry today, and your role within it?
The river cruise and travel industry has shifted significantly in recent years, with travelers increasingly prioritizing more immersive and authentic journeys over traditional mass tourism. There is a growing demand for travel that feels slower, more personal, and more connected to local culture, particularly among higher-value travelers seeking experiences rather than things. Sustainability, cultural authenticity, and access to lesser-visited regions have also become much more important in how travelers choose where and how they travel.
Within that landscape, Pandaw operates in a more specialized segment of the industry focused on small-ship expedition cruising across Southeast Asia and India. Our role is centered around creating deeper regional access through routes that larger ships and mainstream operators often cannot offer. With over 30 years of experience in the region, we have helped pioneer river expedition cruising on waterways such as the Mekong, Brahmaputra, Kerala Backwaters, and Irrawaddy.
We see ourselves not just as a cruise operator, but as a company that helps connect travelers with the history, communities, landscapes, and living cultures of the destinations we operate in. Our smaller ships, local crews, and destination-led approach allow us to deliver a style of travel that feels more intimate, flexible, and experience-driven than conventional cruising.
Can you share any recent developments, milestones, or growth within your organisation?
Over the past year, Pandaw has continued expanding its presence across both Southeast Asia and India, driven by growing demand for smaller-scale, experience-led travel. Last year also marked an important milestone for the company as Pandaw celebrated its 30th anniversary, reflecting three decades of river expeditions across the region.
One of our most significant recent developments has been the success of our Kerala Backwaters expedition, which launched at the end of 2025 aboard a 10-cabin ship. Demand for the route quickly exceeded expectations, leading to the construction of a second vessel, the RV Kerala Pandaw, scheduled to begin sailing in early 2027.
On the digital side, we recently launched a redesigned website featuring improved itinerary navigation, destination content, and enhanced travel advisor resources. We are also continuing to develop an AI agent to help guests decide between itineraries and are under review with Travel Life looking to get accredited for our sustainability efforts.
Another major milestone for the company was being recognized in Tripadvisor’s top 10% of experiences worldwide based on guest reviews over the past 12 months, reflecting the continued strength of guest satisfaction and repeat travel across the Pandaw portfolio.
How do you work with your clients or partners, and how do they benefit from your solutions?
We work closely with both travel advisors and distribution partners to make selling and managing Pandaw journeys as seamless as possible. A major part of that is our dedicated Agent Portal, which gives partners direct access to live availability, itinerary information, marketing assets, pricing, and booking tools in one place. Agents are able to make and manage their own bookings quickly, while also downloading brochures, imagery, and sales materials to support client conversations and marketing efforts.
Beyond the platform itself, we also provide hands-on support, helping advisors match clients to the right itineraries based on travel style, interests, and timing. Because many of our journeys are more specialized and destination-driven, we work collaboratively with partners to help position the experience and build broader Southeast Asia and India itineraries around the cruises.
For our partners, the benefit is having access to a differentiated product in the growing experiential travel market, supported by tools and resources that simplify the sales process while helping them deliver more tailored and immersive travel experiences for their clients.
What are your priorities or focus areas moving forward?
Our focus moving forward is centered around continued growth in experiential and small-ship travel, while maintaining the intimate and destination-led approach that defines Pandaw. We are expanding selectively across Southeast Asia and India, particularly in areas where there is growing demand for slower, more immersive journeys and access to lesser-visited regions.
A key priority is growing our India portfolio, including the launch of the RV Kerala Pandaw on our Kerala Backwaters route in early 2027 and the creation of several shorter itineraries designed for both international and regional travelers. We are seeing strong potential in creating more three-night and four-night routes tailored toward local Asian travelers looking for shorter getaway-style experiences that can fit more easily into busy schedules. These itineraries help introduce a new audience to river cruising while supporting domestic and regional tourism growth.
At the same time, we are continuing to invest in digital tools and partner support, including enhancements to our website and Agent Portal to make it easier for travel advisors to access assets, manage bookings, and work with our team. Maintaining strong local connections also remains central to our strategy, ensuring our itineraries continue to support local communities and showcase the culture, heritage, and everyday life of the regions we sail through.
