XCL World Academy commits to continuous forward-thinking with students at the center

Initiatives such as the Innovation Hub and a special AI course for Grade 6 learners set the institution apart from its peers

While other schools are trying to prepare their students for the future, XCL World Academy (XWA) learners are already there.

Last February, the learning institution for kids two years old to 18 opened its Innovation Hub. The S$25-million, 5-story building is fitted with the latest equipment, from state-of-the-art design and fabrication machines to an esports arena and multimedia labs featuring green screens and augmented, virtual and mixed-reality devices. The school has also partnered with AI specialist SureStart to be the first learning institution to have a 15-week course on AI for its Grade 6 students that will also have instruction once a week by a Harvard fellow. These are only some of XWA’s initiatives intended to put its students ahead in the future, inspired by its ever-evolving, student-centric curriculum.

“We’re shaping the next now,” says Tammy Murphy, head of school of XWA. “We try to be a beacon of light for our students as we leverage innovation, continually adapting to all the changing realities around us to make this world a better place.”

This pedagogy is indicative of XWA’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program. However, true to its philosophy of listening to what students want, the school also offers multiple pathways in high school. Besides taking a high school diploma course under the IB program, students will have the option to take advanced placement courses such as those in world history and computer science starting next year. There are also pathways for learners who want to pursue other interests, such as sports and the arts.

“We feel we’ve developed a truly world-class, holistic curriculum through the guidance of our amazing and experienced teachers,” says Murphy, who has extensive experience with the IB Organization and served as superintendent of several highly acclaimed schools worldwide for nearly four decades. “You have to visit us and walk our hallways to feel the commitment this school has to its learners.”
